-Despite the comparisons to the Detroit game, this game was actually pretty good for San Jose from a scoring chances perspective, as they dominated scoring chances a lot more than the shot attempts story in this game would tell you they did.

-Nieto was on fire last night, having assists on four of the Sharks’ scoring chances

-The Sharks’ fourth line was fantastically invisible in this game, as both Goodrow and McGinn were on the ice for zero scoring chances during any game state

-San Jose was the much better team in this game when it came to shot quality, as almost a third of their unblocked shot attempts were scoring chances, compared to only a fifth of Ottawa’s being scoring chances.

-Despite his two goal performance and good work on the powerplay, this was not a great overall game for Hoffman, as the Sens were outchanced 4-0 while he was on the ice at evens

-Karlsson had quite the night on the powerplay, having a hand in four of the Sens’ five powerplay scoring chances

-Again, Nieto was fantastic last night, completing eight successful passes in the offensive zone, with three of those leading directly to SJ scoring chances

-Pavs had a very high-event game in the offensive zone, as he made 20 plays in the offensive zone, 11 of which were passes (only 8 of which were successful)

-Funny stat: Burns made 7 plays in the offensive zone, and only 1 was a pass attempt

-Once again, the Sharks’ opposition was the more trigger happy team, as SJ attempted shots on 32.48% of their plays, while OTT attempted shots on 43.59% of theirs.

-While players like Dillon, Pavs, and Marleau had good entry nights, the team as a whole only did so well, only carrying the puck in on 29% of their entries.

-A big reason for this was the fact that Nieto, Wingels, Couture, and Hertl–some of the Sharks’ best zone entry players–only combined for six carry-ins in this game.

-Turris has been real solid since getting shipped out to Ottawa, and part of why is his solid play in just about any facet of the game, such as his work on zone entries last night.

-Hoffman generated a lot of entries in this game, but his real good work happened on his carry-ins, where the Sens attempted three shots

-On the bright side, Burns allowed carry-ins on only 50% of the entries attempted against him

-On the not-so-bright side, Braun allowed carry-ins on over 50% of the entries attempted against him

-In perhaps his last game as a Shark, Hannan continued to do the one thing he really does well: defending against opposition zone entry attempts, only allowing one carry-in on eight Senator entry attempts against him in this game.

-Ottawa’s third pair last night was pretty ugly, but both Gryba and Borowiecki (only took me two tries to spell that correctly) did pretty well on entry targeting, only allowing a combined four carry-ins against.

-Karlsson also did pretty darn well, only allowing two carry-ins on SJ’s nine entry attempts against him.

-Burns had 4 turnovers on 11 touches in the defensive zone but you’ve all heard this story before.

-Braun had a pretty good game, managing 3 breakouts on his 13 D-zone puck touches

-The Senators overall way outperformed SJ on zone exits, turning the puck over almost 7% less often, and managing successful breakouts about 8% more often.

-Perennially-underrated Patrick Wiercoch had a hand in Ottawa’s good zone exit numbers, managing 3 breakouts on 11 touches.

-Karlsson’s overall numbers don’t look great, as he turned the puck over quite a bit, but he really turned it on in the third, as most of his zone exit success came in the third stanza of the game.

-Hoffman was great on zone exits, managing a successful breakout on over 50% of his touches.
