-First off, I want everyone to notice the numbers for “even strength scoring chance save percentage” and “percent of even strength Fenwick events that were scoring chances.” San Jose managed only a 60.0% save percentage on EVS scoring chances, while Vancouver managed a 95.2%. Almost half of San Jose’s unblocked shot attempts were scoring chances (47.7%, to be exact), while only 15.2% of Vancouver’s were. Those numbers right there do a pretty good job of representing how last night’s game went.

-Realistically, the Sharks played more than well enough to win last night, as they outchanced Vancouver 23-10 overall, and 21-5 at evens

-However comma one has to wonder how much more lopsided that margin would’ve been had Irwin been in the lineup over Hannan. Hannan didn’t make mistakes of the same magnitude as Burns last night, but he was on the ice for over half of VAN’s even strength scoring chances, and that was in only 13 1/2 even strength minutes. He was also the only Shark to not finish his night with a positive scoring chance differential. Who knows how serious Irwin’s injury is, but if he’s out for an extended period of time, we might as well bid goodbye to the second D pairing being good.

-Wingels had a pretty good game last night, having one scoring chance, and assisting on another five.

-The second line also did pretty well, as every member of the second line finished with at least four scoring chance points

-Props to the Bonino line, as they were the only Vancouver line to finish last night’s game with a positive scoring chance differential.

-A big reason for this was Vrbata, who had 2 scoring chances at even strength, easily leading the Canucks in terms of scoring chance production.

-Once again, to summarize how lopsided this game was, I think it’s good to note that Vancouver’s best period was the third period, where they only generated 2 scoring chances, and finished with a -4 scoring chance differential.

-Although Jumbo turned the puck over 4 times on his pass attempts, he was still on fire last night, completing 25 of his 29 pass attempts. To put that number into perspective, 29 pass attempts is more than half of what Vancouver–as a team–was able to manage last night.

-The third line didn’t make many plays, with Smith only making 4, Hertl making only 5, and Wingels making only 8, but Wingels did do well with the plays he did make, as four of his six passes led directly to San Jose scoring chances.

-Dillon also had a very productive game, making 12 plays in the offensive zone, and having 2 of his 8 passes lead directly to SJ scoring chances.

-Patty and Nieto were the members of the second line that did the most in O-zone, Nieto especially, who only turned it over 1 time on his 13 pass attempts

-If I had to fault San Jose for one thing on these numbers, it would be that they probably could’ve taken more shots. they outshot-attempted the Canucks by 9, but given the huge disparity in shot%, and the number of plays each team made, you have to think SJ must’ve had more chances to shoot the puck.

-Players like Vrbata and Weber are partly responsible for VAN’s shot%, as they had 72.73 and 66.67 shot percentages respectively

-The Sedin line was mostly kept in check and wasn’t able to do much in the offensive zone last night, as no member of that line managed over 10 plays.

-Last night was one of San Jose’s better games of the season on zone entries, as they carried the puck in on 42% of their entries, and attempted a very good amount of shots per each of their entries

-Nieto was pretty good last night, carrying the puck in on three of his six successful entries, and the Sharks were able to generate a lot of shot attempts off of his entries

-Thornton also did pretty well, generating 11 entries

-VAN carried the puck into the offensive zone quite a bit last night, in large part due to the work of their forwards, as Derek Dorsett was the only Canuck forward last night who did not have a carry-in percentage of 50% or above

-Jannik Hansen had a surprisingly ineffective game in the neutral zone, as he generated 8 entries, but only 1 of them was a carry-in

-Not a single Shark defenseman had a carry-in against percentage below 50% last night

-Though it is hard to really make any statements about Mueller’s game, as he was only targeted for 1 entry at even strength

-Luca Sbisa did a pretty good job of defending VAN’s blue line last time the Sharks faced the Canucks, but he wasn’t able to replicate that effort in this game, as he allowed 8 carry-ins on SJ’s 13 entry attempts against him

-Hamhuis was the only VAN defenseman to finish his night having allowed carry-ins on less than 50% of the entries attempted against him

-Edler did decent, allowing 5 carry-ins on 10 SJ entry attempts against him, but also denying 2 entry attempts

-Dillon had another pretty good game, managing 2 successful breakouts, and only 2 turnovers

-Hertl had a good game, successfully breaking the puck out on 4 of his 5 touches

-Patty also did well, managing 7 successful breakouts on 12 touches

-Braun and Vlasic struggled at breaking the puck out themselves, as they each only managed 1 successful breakout

-San Jose only turned the puck over on about 25% of their touches, compared to Vancouver turning it over on about 38% of their touches

-Edler was a pretty big contributor to VAN’s high turnover count, as he turned the puck over 8 times on his 14 touches

-Burrows and Hamhuis also had their fair share of turnovers, turning it over 5 and 7 times repsectively
