The Vancouver Canucks and the San Jos Sharks meet for the third time this season and both teams look different than they did the last time they met. The teams played on Nov. 2, 2024, when the Sharks lost 3-2. They played again on Dec. 23, 2024 when the Sharks lost again, this time by a score of 4-3.
Since then, the Sharks have traded away Mikael Granlund and Cody Ceci, while the Canucks have traded J.T. Miller and Erik Brannstrom and added Filip Chytil, Marcus Pettersson and Drew O’Connor. Last night, the Canucks announced that Marcus Pettersson has signed a six-year extension with the team, which means there will be three Petterssons wearing Canuck blue for the foreseeable future.
The Canucks hope that the new additions and the additions by subtraction will help with the locker room chemistry and possibly help Vancouver get back into the playoff mix. As it stands now, the Canucks are just outside of the race with 59 points in 53 games. The Calgary Flames are just ahead of the Canucks and sit in the second wildcard spot. The Flames also have 59 points in 53 games, but have more regulation wins. The Colorado Avalanche are five points ahead of both teams and hold the first wildcard spot.
Quinn Hughes is the top scorer for the Canucks with 59 points in 47 games. After that, it’s a steep drop off to Conor Garland, who has 34 points in 53 games. Jake DeBrusk leads the team with 19 goals.
Thatcher Demko is returning to form after an injury to start the season. He shutout the Avalanche on Tuesday, stopping all 25 of the shots he faced. Demko is 5-6-3 on the season with a 3.03 goals against average and .882 save percentage.
For the Sharks, the Bay Area News Group’s Curtis Pashelka reports that Ty Dellandrea will return to the lineup after a stint on the injured reserve list. In his place, Nikolai Kovalenko will go on IR.
Kovalenko has been placed on IR and Dellandrea has been activated. Kovalenko (upper body) will not return until after the 4 Nations break. https://t.co/KDSMXxvhhC
