The eyes of the NHL will be on San Jose today as Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals continues his chase for Wayne Gretzky’s goal scoring record. Ovechkin has 886 career goals, single digits away from Gretzky’s career 894 goals. With 18 games remaining in the season for the Capitals’ captain has a chance to break the record this season.
This is game two of the Sharks-Capitals series this season. The Sharks won 2-1 in overtime on Dec. 3 of last year. Despite the loss to the worst team in the league, the Capitals are firmly among the best teams in the league. Washington has 94 points, second only to the Winnipeg Jets in the entire league. While it’s not a sure thing mathematically, it would take an epic meltdown for the Capitals to miss the playoffs. Right now, the team leads the Metropolitan Division, ten points ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes.
While Ovechkin leads the team with 33 goals, it’s Dylan Strome who leads in points with 64. In fact, Ovechkin is fifth on the team in scoring behind Strome, Aliaksei Protas, Pierre-Luc Dubois and Tom Wilson. In the net, Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren have shared duties this season. Thompson has a 28-4-5 record and a .916 save percentage. He’s expected to start in the net for the Capitals today.
For the Sharks, look for Zack Ostapchuk to make his debut in teal today. Ostapchuk and Noah Gregor were the two players received from the Ottawa Senators when the Sharks traded Fabian Zetterlund and Tristen Robins to the Senators. Both players will be in the lineup today.
