The San Jose Sharks will wear the team’s Heritage 2.0 jerseys tonight for the first time this season. As part of the festivities, the Sharks will honor three players from the mid-1990s and early 2000s. Jeff Friesen, Kyle McLaren and Mark Smith will be on the ice to drop the puck in front of Sharks’ fans this evening.
Friesen was drafted 11th overall in 1994 by the San Jose Sharks and played nearly seven seasons with the team. Friesen still ranks ninth all-time among Sharks’ scoring leaders.
Then there’s McLaren, known for his punishing hits on players trying to come into the Sharks’ zone so much so that he broke down “The Perfect Hit” for Drew Remenda on an episode of “Shark Byte” several years ago.
Finally, there’s Smith, who was best known for his rock star hair and his musical talent. While Smith wasn’t a dynamic scorer, he was a fan favorite.
As for the game, the Sharks will play the New Jersey Devils tonight, looking for a bit of revenge after a tough loss in Jersey less than a week ago. The Sharks played a tight game but ultimately lost 3-1 after an empty net goal. This time, the Sharks are a bit more rested. It’s not the second night of back-to-backs, which should give San Jose a bit more jump.
That said, New Jersey is still one of the best teams in the league. The Devils have an 8-2-0 record, having just lost the team’s second game of the season, an 8-4 back-and-forth with the Colorado Avalanche during the Frozen Frenzy. The Devils had one good period in which the team scored four goals, but other than that, it was a bit of a blowout.
San Jose Sharks lines tonight
For the San Jose Sharks, Michael Misa will sit out tonight’s game. It sounds a bit like load management, given that the team has played a lot of games over a short period of time. With Misa out, Patrick Giles will play. Sam Dickinson will play and he’ll be paired with Shakir Mukhamadullin, who returns from injury. Alex Nedeljkovic will be in goal for the Sharks.
