Doug Wilson on Timo Meier: “He’s not far away”

Doug Wilson went on the radio with Nick Kypreos on Tuesday to discuss the San Jose Sharks in a pretty wide-ranging interview. You can listen to the whole thing starting at the 34-minute mark, but I’ve got the bits on the Sharks prospects below. Shout out to Fear the Fin user olegsinkov for the heads up.

On season assessment:

“I think that our coaches have done a great job, cause the way the schedule is set up we had two long road trips early in the year and we went I think 11 days without a practice. So to be able to win games during that time, we have our farm team it here in San Jose, so we’ve been able to call up our young guys on a daily basis and that’s helped a lot. Much like every team there are injuries. That’s just the nature of this type of year.

On Sharks biggest needs:

“Getting Tomas back will be really huge for us. We’ve always given our young guys a chance before going outside the organization so the Timo Meiers, the Nikolay Goldobins, the Kevin Labancs, the Marcus Sorensens, they’re all going to get their chances in the next little bit and we know in a year like this you’re going to need a lot of depth. We like our team.

Update on Timo Meier

“He’s a man-child. He probably would have made our team right out of training camp but he came down with mono. And then this past weekend he scored four goals, two in each one of the games in San Antonio so he’s trending. We want him to ripen a little bit and understand that to come in to play for Pete the way we want him to it’s gotta be in all three zones so he’s not far away from being able to come up and help us. We’ve got probably five or six young forwards that we could plug in and feel like we could trust in a playoff game tomorrow.
