The San Jose Sharks have had a bit of time to brush off the fluke loss on Thursday night and will return to the ice tonight to try to make up for the loss. This could be the team’s best chance to show that it is not the same team that took the ice last season and that it has taken a step forward. The Sharks will play host to the Anaheim Ducks, another team in the NHL that has taken a step forward, but one that is closer to the Sharks’ level in terms of skill and place in the league.
The Ducks are sporting a revamped roster with a new bench boss in Joel Quenneville and some new forwards in Chris Kreider and Mikael Granlund. Locking down forward Mason McTavish and defenseman Jackspon LaCombe certainly helps the team in terms of stability. In the net, Anaheim traded goaltender John Gibson in the summer, clearing the way for Lukas Dostal to claim the net for himself. Dostal is likely up to the task, but this is a lot of pressure for the young netminder to prove he’s ready. Backing him up will be Petr Mrazek, who the Ducks received in return for Gibson.
Entering the NHL this season is 2024 third overall draft pick Beckett Sennecke, who is likely going to have some ups and downs. Sennecke scored an impressive goal in his preseason game against the Sharks, but he’s also had some issues dealing with the speed of the NHL.
Also, keep an eye on Leo Carlsson, who is starting to come into his own as a top center in the NHL.
The Ducks started the season out with a loss to the Seattle Kraken. Sennecke scored his first NHL goal in that game, but the Ducks fell 3-1. Dostal stopped 28 of 31 shots in the loss.
San Jose Sharks lines tonight
San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng reports there will be some lineup changes for the Sharks tonight, though fans will be disappointed to find out that Micheal Misa still will not play. It sounds like the forward lines will stay the same because Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky liked what he saw from his forwards from the last game. The defense will change with Shakir Mukhamadullin sitting and Sam Dickinson playing.
