Ferriero scores game winner as Penguins shutout Sharks 3-0

Harri Sateri made 17 saves in net but got no offensive support as the Worcester Sharks were defeated 3-0 by Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Saturday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena, ending their three-game winning streak. Penguins goaltender Brad Thiessen made 30 saves as the Sharks were shutout for the first time since their 4-0 home opening loss against the Albany Devils back on Oct. 20, 2012. Despite the loss, the Sharks remain in second place of the Atlantic Division, five points behind the division leading Portland Pirates.

The Penguins jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 40-seconds into the game when former Worcester/San Jose Sharks forward Benn Ferriero corralled a centering feed from linemate Beau Bennett, who was behind Sateri’s net, and slid the puck past Sateri for his fourth goal of the season, his first since Dec. 7, 2012. Despite having two power play opportunities in the first period following the Ferriero goal, the Sharks were unable to get the puck past Thiessen, who made 11 saves in the period.

In the second period, Penguins forward Riley Holzapfel used Sharks defenseman Mike Brennan as a screen and ripped a shot from 37-feet out on the left wing that beat Sateri glove side for his ninth goal of the season at 3:43. Three-and-a-half minutes later at 7:11 and with the Sharks hemmed inside their own zone, Penguins alternate captain Warren Peters tucked in a rebound at the side of Sateri’s net for his fifth goal of the season to push the lead to 3-0.

The Sharks outshot the Penguins 8-2 in the third period but Thiessen turned away all eight shots to earn his first shutout since Nov. 4, 2011.
