Gameday Thread: Antti Niemi says “No” as Red Wings pour on 18 shots during first period

Antti Niemi with a breathtaking performance in the first period to keep the score knotted at zero. Detroit threw everything they had at him.

Which might be the lone bright spot of those brutal twenty minutes where the Sharks were outplayed in every facet of the game– the Red Wings got nothing. It’s still knotted at zero headed into the second period, and if you’re a believer in the ability of a coaching staff to make tactical changes at intermission, that bodes well (read: better) for San Jose.

It doesn’t get any easier from here on out of course– the Red Wings are coming off their best period of the series in an arena that is absolutely rocking.

But, taking the scoreboard out of our analysis, it can’t get any worse. There’s no conceivable way the Sharks come out and get beat around the rink like they did that period.

Next goal might win this thing.

God save us all.
