How to watch Sharks in Rookie Faceoff; Other broadcast notes

The future of the San Jose Sharks is in Los Angeles this morning, getting ready for a weekend worth of games against some of the other future NHL stars. On the Sharks’ end of the ice, we’re talking about Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith, Quentin Musty, Filip Bystedt and Collin Graf. On the backend, there’s Luca Cagnoni, Shakir Mukhamadullin and Sam Dickinson. The future is teal and we are there for it!

This Rookie Tournament is one of many happening across North America this weekend. It features rookies from the Utah Hockey Club, Seattle Kraken, Anaheim Ducks, Los Angeles Kings, Vegas Golden Knights and Colorado Avalanche. Of course, San Jose won’t face all of those teams, but the Sharks will get a healthy look at some highly competitive play.

How to watch the Sharks at the 2024 Rookie Faceoff Tournament

First off, as much as I am loathe to say anything nice about the Kings, Los Angeles has worked out a way to make sure everyone can watch the games. LA will use its crew to stream all of the tournament games.

You can find the link on the Kings’ website. There’s also expected to be links on the Sharks website, as well as the websites of the other participating teams, but they all link back to the same feed.

Game 1: Friday, Sept. 13 San Jose vs. Utah, 1:00 p.m. PT

Up first for the Sharks is the Utah Hockey Club. The two sides will play today at 1 p.m. PT.

Look for some young stars to start for Utah.

If you watch, you’ll get to see 2024 first-round pick Tij Iginla in action, as well as highly touted defensive prospect Maveric Lamoureux.

We hear that Celebrini is expected to play in game one for the the Sharks.

Game 2: Sunday, Sept. 15 Anaheim vs. San Jose, 4:30 p.m. PT

The Sharks will then have a day off before facing off with the Ducks and their spiffy new uniforms. Newly acquired Cutter Gauthier headlines this group for Anaheim.

Also look for the 2024 third overall pick Beckett Sennecke and the 2022 22nd overall pick Nathan Gaucher.

Game 3: Monday, Sept. 16 Colorado vs. San Jose, 11:30 a.m. PT

And the Sharks wrap up the tournament on Monday against the Colorado Avalanche rookies.

While the Avs don’t exactly have the best prospect pool in the NHL — the team ranked 31st on The Athletic’s Corey Pronman’s Prospect Pipeline rankings — there are still a few names to get excited about. We won’t be seeing goaltending prospect and 2024 second-round pick Ilya Nabokov, but Calum Ritchie should offer some thrills.

Sharks broadcasting team for 2024-25

The Sharks also announced details of who will be on air and on the radio for the 2024-25 season. 76 of the team’s 82 games will air on NBC Sports California, with six other games “nationally televised.” Let’s be honest, “nationally televised” really means pay for ESPN+.

When the games aren’t available on NBC Sports California, you can listen on the Sharks Audio Network.

With Bret Hedican moving on to San Diego — there’s a really nice writeup on that here — there’s a spot open on the broadcast team.

Look for Randy Hahn and Drew Remenda to continue their stellar work on air. On the radio, Dan Rusanowsky will offer the best play-by-play work in the business. He’ll be joined by a variety of Sharks alumni, including Dan Boyle, Jason Demers, Jamal Mayers, Scott Hannan and Alex Stalock.
