John Scott, Scott Hannan will not be re-signed

During Doug Wilson’s pre-draft media availability it was confirmed that Scott Hannan and John Scott will not be re-signed. Wilson pointed to wanting his fourth line to function, well, like the other three lines; which sounds a lot like the Wilson of 2013 and not so much like the one we’ve been subjected to the past 14 months or so.

The Sharks general manager also left the door open for both Antti Niemi and Matt Irwin to remain with the team, though it’s tough to take that too seriously. It has seemed apparent that Niemi was no longer welcome back with the team unless it’s at an extreme discount (and he can probably get better money somewhere else), but with the Sharks hovering around Cam Talbot this might just be a negotiation tactic.

San Jose has a favorable position in this year’s draft, but there’s still plenty of work to do to prepare the team for the 2015-16 season. Now that we know Hannan and Scott won’t be back, we can focus our prayer on Wilson making that qualifying offer for Tyler Toffoli.

Brenden Dillon and Melker Karlsson are both RFAs, but Wilson doesn’t seem to think there will be a problem re-signing either of them.

Evgeni Nabokov’s named came up as a possibility to join the Sharks in some way. Perhaps as a scout? Or a goaltending coach?

Update: Friend of the blog Kevin Kurz is reporting that the Sharks will get draft pick compensation from the Oilers for the hiring of Todd McLellan.
