This one’s the rubber match between the Utah Mammoth and the San Jose Sharks. The Sharks and Mammoth wrap up the season series tonight at SAP Center. The Mammoth won the first game 6-3 on Oct. 17 behind a hat trick by Nick Schmaltz. San Jose fought back in game 2 on Nov. 18 when Macklin Celebrini scored the game winner in overtime, capping a hat trick of his own and sending the Sharks off with a 3-2 victory.
The Mammoth continue to be in the mix for a playoff spot since these two teams last met. Utah’s 12-11-3 record is good for 27 points. The Chicago Blackhawks currently sit in the second wildcard spot. The Blackhawks also have 27 points, but have played one fewer game than the Mammoth.
For the Mammoth tonight, the big question is whether star Logan Cooley will be ready to go. He was positive after participating in the morning skate today.
“I feel good,” Cooley told NHL.com’s Catherine Bogart. “…overall, I feel good and morning skate went well. So, get some work on it now, see how it feels, but it should be good.”
Cooley suffered a massive knee-on-knee collision during Saturday’s game against the St. Louis Blues. Alexey Toropchenko was ejected from the game for the hit.

Cooley was evaluated and it was later determined to be nothing more than a really bad charlie horse. he is likely to play tonight. Cooley is the Mammoth’s top scorer with 23 points in 26 games. He also leads the team with 14 goals. Schmaltz is close behind with 22 points and 10 goals.
In the net, Karel Vejmelka is the top goaltender with a 10-7-2 record, 2.74 goals against average and .889 save percentage. Vitek Vanecek is the backup with a 2-4-1 record, 3.03 goals against average and .870 save percentage.
On the Sharks’ end of the ice, Vincent Desharnais has been placed on injured reserve, and Adam Gaudette is questionable because of an illness.

As a result, the Sharks called up Pavol Regenda to backfill.

With all of that in mind, here’s how we think the Sharks’ lines will shake out. Note that Yaroslav Aaskarov will be in the net for the Sharks. Michael Misa and Jeff Skinner were at practice but are not expected to play tonight. Here’s the projected lineup according to NHL.com.

As for the Mammoth, look for Vejmelka in the net and Cooley back on the ice. The only major injury is Alex Kerfoot, who hasn’t played since October.
