Micheal Haley suspended one game

The NHL Department of Player Safety has suspended San Jose Sharks forward Micheal Haley for one game following his ejection from Saturday night’s game in Nashville.

As the video clearly shows, Haley was hit from behind by Calle Jarnkrok of the Nashville Predators, who was to be assessed a two-minute minor for boarding. In retaliation, Haley tracked down Jarnkrok and punched him in the face. Haley was assessed an intent to injure on the play and ejected.

The justification of what Haley did has been a pretty passionately debated topic in Sharks fan circles. My take for those who missed it is that while I can certainly understand what Haley did and think that Jarnkrok is kind of a weasel for not answering the bell, he didn’t want to fight which makes what Haley did no matter how cathartic wrong in a great series of other wrongs. While I don’t agree completely that Jarnkrok was blindsided, he was absolutely not a willing participant.

The Sharks are already short handed and now lose two more bodies going into Tuesday night’s matchup with the New York Rangers. Haley will serve his suspension and Couture’s status remains unclear after taking a Brent Burns shot to the face. It will be interesting to see who is called up and what the lines will look like come Tuesday.
