The summer of 2017 promises to be a busy one for San Jose Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson. Franchise cornerstones Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau hit unrestricted free agency, while he hopes to sign goaltender Martin Jones and defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic to contract extensions.

We’ll keep track of all of Wilson’s work here throughout the offseason, updating this post with each new signing, departure, extension for players under contract, and re-signing of restricted and unrestricted free agents like Chris Tierney, Marleau, and Thornton.

Arrivals

G Antoine Bibeau

The Sharks signed Bibeau on July 1, and he will likely be the Barracuda’s backup behind Baz Bastien Award winner Troy Grosenick.

F Brandon Bollig

Bollig joined the Sharks on the 4th of July, signing a one-year deal. We’re not really sure why.

Departures

F Patrick Marleau, Toronto Maple Leafs

San Jose’s all-time leading scorer and longest-tenured player signed a three-year, $18.75 million deal with the Toronto Maple Leafs on Sunday, July 2, leaving the only team he’s ever known.

F Micheal Haley, Florida Panthers

Haley signed a two-year, one-way contract with the Florida Panthers, reuniting him with former San Jose Sharks assistant and current Panthers Head Coach Bob Boughner.

Extensions

G Martin Jones (6 years, $34.5 million)

D Marc-Edouard Vlasic (8 years, $56 million)

General Manager Doug Wilson got his biggest priority out of the way on the first day of free agency, and ensured that neither Jones nor Vlasic hit unrestricted free agency in 2018.

Re-Signings

F Joe Thornton (1 year, $8 million)

Jumbo Joe returned to the Sharks, and signed the contract on top of a lawnmower on his 38th birthday.

F Chris Tierney (1 year, $735,000)

The restricted free agent re-signed with the Sharks on July 13 on a one-year contract reportedly worth $735,000, which was the value of his qualifying offer.

F Marcus Sorensen (2 years, $700,000 AAV)

The restricted free agent signed a two-year deal on July 18. It becomes a one-way contract in the second season, meaning Sorensen will be owed $700,000 whether or not he plays in the NHL. He will be waivers-exempt during the 2016-17 season.

F Barclay Goodrow (2 years, $650,000 AAV))

The 24-year-old signed a two-year deal on August 7. Goodrow is no longer waivers-exempt, and will have to be waived in order to get set down to the San Jose Barracuda. His salary becomes fully guaranteed as a one-way contract in the second season of his deal.
