No update on Todd McLellan’s future coming today

This season’s “locker clean-out day” was expected to more or less be a euphemism for “firing Todd McLellan day” but the Sharks‘ head coach confirmed that the organization has yet to come to a decision on his future. Speaking to the media on the final occasion this season that the Sharks’ players, coaching staff and management will be together, McLellan announced there wasn’t an update to provide on his status behind the San Jose bench going forward.

“The answers you guys are looking for today, I’m not going to be able to give them to you,” said McLellan. “I need a little more time and I’m sure the organization needs a little bit more time.”

David Pollak of the Mercury News reported yesterday that McLellan and the Sharks parting ways could come via mutual agreement given the multitude of coaching positions likely to open up around the league this summer, possibly including with McLellan’s former team in Detroit. McLellan leaves for the World Championships in a little over a week and said he expected to know his future with the Sharks by then.

“There’s a lot that goes into a review, organizationally too,” McLellan said. “There are a lot of decisions that have to be made. You’ve got ownership involvement, you’ve got managerial decisions that have to be made and there’s a lot that goes into it.”

McLellan has one year remaining on his contract.
