Overall Olympic Standings

As is the case with the Sharks stats page, I will update this as games are completed. Here are the official IIHF tiebreaking rules, and like we have mentioned over the course of the tournament, goal differential will be key.

[Feb 21st, 11:47 PM]: Standings are now updated. USA in the number one slot, hiyo!

[Feb 21st, 9:13 PM]: With Team USA’s 5-3 win over Canada today, they are guaranteed a bye in the first round and can do no worse than a two seed. More updates to follow the culmination of SWE-FIN.

[Feb 20th, 1:34 AM]: As expected, the Czechs, Swedes, and Finns all picked up three points on Friday. Nothing has really changed in respect to Team USA’s bid for a top four seed– an overtime loss still puts them in the top five. Saturday’s games have no effect on whether the Americans will receive a bye, but does paint a clearer picture as to who will round out the bottom pairings in the elimination round. I’ll break down all potential scenarios before Sunday’s Team USA Gameday post.

[Feb 19th, 7:32 AM]: Still early to read a whole lot into this, as Group C and half of Group B have yet to play their second game of the tournament. A win against the Canadians (in regulation or overtime) gets Team USA a bye regardless of how things shake out with other nations; a regulation loss won’t sink the dream entirely, but might be hard to recover from as long as teams expected to pick up three points today (CZE, SWE, FIN) do so. Russia’s loss to Slovakia yesterday definitely helped, and Team USA’s goal differential (barring an epic collapse against Canada of course) looks to be fairly strong at this juncture. Pick up that much maligned loser point on Sunday and things get pretty interesting– anywhere from the second to the fifth seed would be guaranteed, with goal differential likely determining where things eventually land. Oh how sweet that outburst with five minutes remaining against Norway looks right now.
