The NHL trade deadline has officially came and went. This week’s round up will be centered around the trades our rivals made. Who won the trade deadline? Probably Doug Wilson, but who knows.
Anaheim Ducks (24-30-8)
The Anaheim Ducks are still in second-to-last place in the division. With this in mind, they decided to shake things up. They sent Ondrej Kase to the Boston Bruins in exchange for veteran David Backes, youngin’ Axel Andersson and a 2020 first-round pick on Thursday.
The Ducks weren’t done working with the Bruins, though. At the deadline, they swapped players again. This time the Ducks acquired Denton Henin in exchange for Nick Ritchie. That wasn’t all for the Ducks. They sent Derek Grant, who was having a career-high season with Anaheim to the Philadelphia Flyers for a 2020 fourth-round pick and AHL player Nick Criscuolo.
But wait, there’s more. The Columbus Blue Jackets sent forward Sonny Milano to the home of Disneyland for forward Devin Shore. They wrapped it up with two more trades. Daniel Sprong is off to play with Brenden Dillon and the Washington Capitals while Christian Joos joins the Ducks.
Anaheim also sent goalie Angus Redmond and a conditional seventh-round pick to the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Joel Persson.
This team looks pretty different now.
The Ducks hit the ice last night against the Edmonton Oilers and won 4-3 in overtime. Milano scored twice in his first game with Anaheim, including the OT winner.
Arizona Coyotes (31-26-8)
The Arizona Coyotes went into the trade deadline with very little cap space. It seems like they felt confident in their roster and did not make any big moves at the deadline. After acquiring Taylor Hall earlier in the season, they were good to go.
The lone move they made was a minor league transaction. Markus Hannikainen is headed to the Arizona from the Columbus Blue Jackets organization in exchange for a conditional seventh-round 2020 draft pick.
The same Arizona team played again last night against the Florida Panthers. The Coyotes lost 2-1.
Calgary Flames (32-25-6)
Calgary Flames fans had a bit of a scare Monday morning when Johnny Gaudreau left practice early on deadline day. Turns out, he just had to pee. Johnny Hockey is still a Flame.
The Flames did some actual dealing, however. They traded a third-round draft pick for Chicago Blackhawks’ defenseman Erik Gustafsson. They also made a deadline deal with the Los Angeles Kings. Derek Forbort is Calgary bound while the Kings obtain a conditional fourth-round pick in 2021. The Flames also struck a deal with the Sharks. Defenseman Brandon Davidson will be joining the Sharks for future considerations.
The Flames played the Bruins last night. Calgary won 5-2.
Edmonton Oilers (33-22-7)
The Oilers took to the trade deadline with Connor McDavid back in the lineup. They sought out wingers to join their star center. They grabbed Andreas Athanasiou and Ryan Kuffner from the Detroit Red Wings for Sam Gagner and two second-round picks. They weren’t done there. They sent a fifth-round draft pick to the Ottawa Senators for Tyler Ennis.
The Oilers went back to the Red Wings to make another deal, swapping Kyle Brodziak and a conditional pick for defenseman Mike Green.
The Oilers played the Ducks last night. Ennis and Athanasiou both scored in their first game with Edmonton. The Oilers picked up a point, but lost 4-3 in overtime.
Los Angeles Kings (22-35-6)
The last place Kings made waves days before the trade deadline, sending Jack Campbell and Kyle Clifford to the Toronto Maple Leafs. As we talked about a minute ago, they also sent Derek Forbort to Calgary.
Before the deadline hit, they sent two franchise players away. Alec Martinez went to the Vegas Golden Knights for two second-round draft picks. Tyler Toffoli is a Vancouver Canuck while the Kings gained Tim Schaller, Tyler Madden, and a 2020 second-round draft pick in return. Martinez netted a goal and had an assist in his opening game with Vegas.
Some big moves from the worst team in the division!
The Kings face Patrick Marleau and the Pittsburgh Penguins tonight at 7:30 PT.
Vancouver Canucks (33-22-6)
As we just mentioned, the Vancouver Canucks landed Tyler Toffoli before the deadline and didn’t do much else after. They made a goalie swap with the New Jersey Devils, sending Zane MacIntyre to the Devils for Louis Domingue.
Rather than coming out of the trade deadline a stronger team, they lost goalie Jacob Markstrom to a lower-body injury. His status is up in the air. A long-term loss of Markstrom would be tough for a Canucks team that’s currently third in the Pacific Division and appears to be a playoff contender.
The Canucks beat the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 last night with newly acquired Toffoli scoring the game winning goal in overtime.
Vegas Golden Knights (34-22-8)
Yes, the Vegas Golden Knights are first in the division. Yes, they made good trades at the deadline. Whatever.
Aside from adding Martinez, they also scored a goalie. Robin Lehner is now the backup to Marc-Andre Fleury. In return, the Chicago Blackhawks gained Malcolm Subban, prospect Slava Demin, and a second-round draft pick. They also acquired former Arizona Coyote Nick Cousins from the Montreal Canadiens for a 2021 fourth-round pick.
Good for them, I guess.
Vegas plays the Oilers tonight at 7:30 PT.
