Quick Bite: Canucks spoil Reimer’s debut

In James Reimer‘s Sharks debut, the team in teal once again entered the third period trailing by a goal. Brent Burns would tie it up five minutes into the period, but the Sharks couldn’t get the lead back as they dropped the third of three meetings with Vancouver this week.

After allowing the first goal in their first two games versus the Canucks, the Sharks drew first blood in the third. Micheal Haley, in the lineup due to Melker Karlsson‘s injury, intercepted a pass from Ben Hutton nine minutes into the contest and poked his own rebound past Jacob Markstrom for his first goal in the NHL since 2011.

Haley followed his unexpected contribution on the scoresheet with a double minor for high sticking Sven Baertschi, and the Canucks made the Sharks pay 18 seconds before the first penalty expired. Reimer stopped an initial shot by Baertschi but the rebound went right to Linden Vey, who banged it home to tie the game at 1–1. Daniel Sedin made it 2–1 Canucks early in the second period after a tripping penalty to Joe Pavelski gave Vancouver its fourth power play.

After a pair of unsuccessful power play opportunities of their own in the second period, the Sharks entered the third in a familiar position. Trailing by a goal, they immediately put pressure on the Canucks to start the period. A huge save by Markstrom on Tomas Hertl kept San Jose from tying the game right away, but Brent Burns scored the equalizer at 4:53 with a shot from the slot that Markstrom couldn’t stop.

The Sharks nearly took the lead on a delayed penalty to Vey, but Markstrom came up with another enormous save on Patrick Marleau. Joonas Donskoi was called for tripping Hutton right as the Vey penalty expired, and Dan Hamhuis put the Canucks in front again with their third power play goal of the night. San Jose killed a seventh Vancouver power play following roughing penalties to Burns, Joe Thornton and Alexandre Burrows, but Burrows scored a goal into the empty net with two minutes left to ice the game.

With the Kings‘ regulation loss to the Ducks this afternoon, the Sharks remain four points behind LA and fall to six behind Anaheim.

Sharks goals (assists): Micheal Haley (unassisted), Brent Burns (Joe Thornton, Marc-Edouard Vlasic)
