Quick Bite: Martin Jones sets shutout record, Sharks win in shootout

Martin Jones has set a new shutout record, and the Sharks won their first shootout of the season in DeBoer's return to New Jersey

Martin Jones allowed a goal on the first shot he faced this season - and he didn't allow another until late in the third period tonight.

Jones set a new record for consecutive minutes played without a goal allowed both for an individual Sharks goalie and for the Sharks franchise as a whole. The new time to beat is 234:33.

Head coach Peter DeBoer's return to New Jersey was fittingly a classic low-scoring Devils game, though shots and scoring chances were high. The Sharks outshot the Devils 34-32 after three periods of play and their first ever 3-on-3 overtime. Jones made two saves in the shootout, and goals from Joe Pavelski and Brent Burns, that was enough to get the Sharks their fourth consecutive win to start the season.

Here's the first goal of the game, scored by Patrick Marleau two minutes in:

The first half of the game was light on penalties - Mike Brown and Jordin Tootoo took offsetting roughing penalties early in the first, and no more calls were made until Patrick Marleau's missed penalty shot. The teams traded powerplays late in the second, with the Sharks keeping their penalty kill perfect, and with New Jersey's shorthanded goal being waived off for goaltender interference.

The Sharks took a string of three penalties to start the third period, playing two men down twice. Their penalty kill stayed perfect once again, and had killed off fifteen consecutive penalties. The Devils didn't record a shot on goal in their one minute of five-on-three time.

However, a call of too many men on the ice late in the third bit the Sharks, with the Devils scoring one minute into their powerplay to break both Jones' shutout streak and the team's streak of perfect penalty killing, while also tying the game and pushing it into overtime. Yeesh.

There were a few chances for both teams in the five minute 3-on-3, with Burns making an excellent offensive play:

Jones allowed one goal and stopped two in the shootout, and Pavelski and Burns both scored, making a third shooter for the Sharks unnecessary. The Sharks stay perfect, opening the season 4-0-0.

Sharks goal (assists): Patrick Marleau (Joel Ward, Tomas Hertl)

Sharks Saves: Martin Jones - 31
