Quick Bite: Martin Jones shuts out Canucks in Sharks win
In his first appearance with the Sharks, the goaltender made 30 saves.
San Jose skated to a 4-0 win over the Canucks on Tuesday night behind goals from both halves of the Paul Martin-Brent Burns defensive pairing and 30 saves from new goaltender Martin Jones.
Despite being out-shot 30-22 and taking six penalties, San Jose held the Canucks off the board. Jones had something to do with that, as did a fair amount of puck luck. But for now, let's just pencil in Jones as this year's Vezina winner.
Tomas Hertl had a stellar game, scoring a goal and picking up three shots — second only to Burns. He spent a lot of time in front of the net screening whichever goalie the Canucks had in net. It's nice to see him going to the dirt areas, something he'll have to do if he's to succeed as a winger.
No Joe Thornton, Joe Pavelski or Marc-Edouard Vlasic tonight as they're all down in San Jose still.
Too many penalties, but it's preseason and the Sharks won 4-0. Let's enjoy that for a night. We'll have more on tonight's game up in the morning.
Goals (Assists): Paul Martin (John McCarthy), Brent Burns (Ben Smith), Tomas Hertl (Justin Braun, Matt Tennyson), Nikolay Goldobin (Burns, Hertl)
Saves: Martin Jones, 30
Next Game: Sept. 25 vs. Arizona Coyotes
