Quick Bite: Martin Jones steals win for Sharks

Martin Jones had one of the greatest goaltending performances in San Jose Sharks history on Monday night and Joe Pavelski scored as the Sharks laid an absolute egg against the Calgary Flames but won 2-1 in overtime.

Brent Burns powered his way to the front of the net and Pavelski managed to slide the puck through Jone Ortio’s five-hole to win it in overtime.

With 1:18 to play the Flames scored for the first time. It took 48 shots and a 6-on-4 advantage for Calgary to break down Jones as the Sharks were finally burned for their endless march to the penalty box. In one of San Jose’s worst performances of the year, Jones managed to hold things together for almost the entirety of the night. Joe Colborne scored the game-tying goal with Brenden Dillon sitting in the penalty box.

After a goal-saving crease clear by Brenden Dillon at one end, Brent Burns opened the scoring at the other with a booming, screened shot that gave him a goal in his fourth-straight game.

The Sharks committed the first penalty of the game as Joe Thornton went ot the box for interference. That penalty kill was short lived as Nick Spaling drew a penalty on Mark Giordano to set up an extended 4-on-4 followed by a brief San Jose power play. The Sharks created chances, including a great scoring opportunity in the crease as the power play expired, but the Flames managed to keep the puck out.

San Jose continued to load into the penalty box and Martin Jones bailed out the Sharks time and again in the first period. Three different minor penalties in the first period gave the Flames plenty of zone time and Jones was more than up to the task. The Sharks didn’t get a shot on goal after the 8:17 mark of the first.

Things didn’t go much better in the second period as it took the Sharks 10:11 to take their first shot on goal of the second period. In that time, the Flames had already had a couple chances on the power play and were thoroughly dominating play. Jones was the only reason Calgary hadn’t at least equalized.
