Quick Bite: Sharks shutout by Ducks

A slow start and an very good shutout performance from goaltender Anton Khudobin was too much for the Sharks to overcome tonight against the Ducks, dropping this game 1-0, after news of a potential Patrick Marleau trade was reported earlier this evening.

The Sharks got off to a rough start early in the third period, not getting their first shot until more than five minutes of game time had passed. Corey Perry scored early for the Ducks, but by the end of the period shots had evened out at eleven apiece.

While there weren’t any goals in the second period, it was still an eventful twenty minutes. It looked for a moment like Tommy Wingels had tied the game, but upon review it clearly hit the crossbar.

The Sharks had one powerplay in the period, but it only lasted a few seconds, because Joe Thornton took a penalty leading to a four on four. The Sharks killed off another penalty later in the period.

A fight broke out late in the second after Wagner’s hit on Nieto, which you can see here:

Six penalties were handed out as a result of the fighting, with Brenden Dillon and Michael Haley both getting fighting majors (Dillon also got a game misconduct, as did Wagner).

The Sharks finally caught up with and eventually passed the Ducks in shots in the third period, but they were unable to get one past Anton Khudobin.

It seems there’s a possibility Michael Haley could be suspended because he started a fight immediately after coming off the bench:

This could be an interesting storyline over the next couple of days.

Joe Thornton was tripped and slammed into the boards late in the third period. He seemed to be in a considerable amount of pain, but stayed in the game for the last four minutes of play. Hopefully nothing more comes of this.

The Sharks had back-to-back powerplays to end the third, but were unable to convert against the Ducks highly rated penalty kill. The Sharks have yet to score a powerplay goal at home.
