Quick bites: Celebrini seals it in overtime

San Jose Sharks fans will get the opportunity to celebrate a lot of firsts in Macklin Celebrini’s NHL career and hopefully a lot of records in the future. Last night, fans got to see Celebrini’s first career overtime goal and his first career game-winning goal.

It wasn’t the prettiest, but it sure fooled all the Red Wings.

Shouldn’t have made it to overtime

The overtime goal was the conclusion of a game that shouldn’t have made it to extra time. The Sharks, as a whole, were the better team in the game, particularly in the first and third periods.

That said, there were lapses in the team’s play, and often times, those lapses led to stupid mistakes and, ultimately, goals. Detroit’s third goal was a particularly bad lapse.

On the first goal, the giveaway along the boards and then allowing Dylan Larkin to walk in all by himself in front of Mackenzie Blackwood was another bad look for the Sharks.

Best line on the ice

While the top line of Mikael Granlund, William Eklund and Fabian Zetterlund did the heavy lifting and the second line of Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith and Barclay Goodrow are starting to gel, it was the work of the fourth line that was the most impactful of the night.

The line of Luke Kunin, Klim Kostin and Carl Grundstrom combined for one goal and didn’t give up a goal in return. What’s more, the combo had seven shots for and zero shots against at five-on-five play. Grundstrom’s work at five-on-five was particularly impactful.

Grundstrom was credited with five hits and four shots at 5-on-5 play.

Not Blackwood’s best night … and what it could mean

Last night was not Mackenzie Blackwood’s best night. Blackwood stopped just 17 of the 24 shots he faced for a .810 save percentage.

Of course, it’s hard to blame him on some of the goals. The own goal was just bad luck. The Larkin goal was a highlight reel play on Larkin’s part.

Blackwood also made some exceptional saves …

But it still probably leaves the door open for someone else to start in Dallas on Wednesday … maybe Yaroslav Askarov. Given that it’s the first of back-to-back games, Dallas might be a good game for Askarov to make his debut as a San Jose Sharks’ goaltender.
