The San Jose Sharks home game against the New York Rangers ended with a lopsided 6-1 loss, a result that highlighted just how far the Sharks still have to go. What started as a chance to extend San Jose’s two game win streak, turned into a tough lesson in defensive lapses, missed opportunities and a lack of offensive spark. The Rangers simply dominated the game from start to finish, and the Sharks could never find a rhythm.
From the puck drop, it was clear that the Rangers were taking charge. Artemi Panarin wasted no time getting on the board, lighting the lamp for his 32nd goal of the season. Barely two minutes later, Panarin struck again, his 33rd of the year, pushing the Rangers to a 2-0 lead.

The Sharks had some flashes of offensive promise early, with a few shots on goal, but Rangers’ goaltender Jonathan Quick was up to the challenge. San Jose couldn’t find an answer, and by the end of the period, they were trailing 2-0 with little to show for their efforts.
The second period was a lot of the same thing. Adam Fox added another goal for the Rangers, leaving the score 3-0 at the end of the second period.
Despite a few chances, the Sharks just couldn’t create consistent pressure. The team couldn’t seem to get any sustained zone time, and when it did, the shots were blocked or easily handled. The Rangers’ aggressive penalty kill kept the Sharks from getting anything going.
The third period was all about the Rangers finishing what the team started. At 3:08, Jonny Brodzinski put the Rangers up 4-0 with a quick strike. Less than two and a half minutes later, Fox added another to make it 5-0.
The game continued to slip away as Vincent Trocheck capitalized on a shorthanded opportunity at 16:53, making the score 6-0.
However, Sharks forward Cam Lund scored his first career goal on the power play, assisted by fellow rookies Collin Graf and Will Smith, making it 6-1.
It was a brief flash of hope in an otherwise forgettable game for San Jose. The Rangers, though, never let up, and the Sharks couldn’t mount any real pressure to salvage a miracle comeback.
Looking at this report from Hockey Stat Cards, not many Sharks players had an outstanding game.
For the second game in a row, Timothy Liljegren was one of the best defensemen on the ice. The pairing of Mario Ferraro and Shakir Mukhamadullin had a difficult go of it. They were each on the ice for three goals against.
Coach Warsofsky on gameplay
“I didn’t like our start. We weren’t skating or physically engaged,” Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky told the media after the game.
“We got to be more physically engaged, that’s for sure,” said Warsofsky.
This game was a tough one for the Sharks as San Jose was thoroughly outplayed in all aspects. The power play was ineffective, and the defense struggled to contain the Rangers’ speed and skill. It’s a loss that leaves plenty of questions unanswered for the Sharks.
How does the team bounce back from a game like this? How can the players find more consistency on both ends of the ice? With another tough opponent upcoming, San Jose will need to regroup quickly if it wants to avoid a repeat.
As for this one, it’s a reminder that there’s still a lot of work to do.
Cam Lund’s 1st NHL goal
As stated before, the bright spot is that Lund scored his first NHL goal last night in just his second professional game.

A few days prior, at his first NHL game, Lund told the media he had 15 family members in town for the game.
“I mean, there’s two really good teams. We just played Toronto and New York. So, I mean, the pace is really fast, too. So and kind of just adapting to that,” Lund told the media.
