The San Jose Sharks are stuck at 20 wins this season and while that’s an improvement over the 19 the team had last season, the Sharks have a long way to go to return to the playoffs. That was on display last night at the Scotiabank Saddledome, where the Calgary Flames showed the two team’s season records as one of the stats.

With 38 wins last night, 39 after the final horn, the Flames are still fighting for the playoffs. Calgary is on the brink of elimination with three games left to play, which means the Sharks would need at least double the wins to make the postseason in the future. It’s going to take some time.
That said, there are some positives to take away from all of this, specifically in the first period, where the Sharks controlled the gameplay.

Tough outing for Romanov
The trouble for the Sharks is that goaltender Georgi Romanov didn’t have as good a start to the game. This was Romanov’s sixth career start and it was a rough one. The Flames had just six shots for in the first period and Romanov allowed two goals.
While he found his way a bit later in the game, four goals on 29 shots isn’t the best night. He finished with a .862 save percentage and a minus-0.94 goals saved above expected.
How the players did
First off, congrats to Tyler Toffoli for achieving yet another 30-goal season. Toffoli got on the board early in the game, picking up his own rebound.

Toffoli was by far, the best player on the ice for the Sharks and had a few prime scoring chances after that first goal.

Unfortunately, the rest of the team, as you can see from Hockey Stat Cards, left something to be desired. Defenseman Henry Thrun had a particularly bad night; he was on the ice for two goals against and had some defensive breakdowns that led to scoring chances.
Macklin Celebrini, Will Smith and Timothy Liljegren were all on the ice for three goals against.
