Quick bites: Sharks end season with loss to Edmonton

The San Jose Sharks have closed the season with a loss, ending with a 20-50-12 and 52 points. The Sharks fell to the Edmonton Oilers 3-0 on Wednesday night and will now get ready for a summer off and hopefully some growth.

The Sharks’ offense was aggressive at the beginning of the first frame of last night’s game. But halfway in, the Sharks had taken six shots, and the Oilers were at zero until Ty Emberson sniped one home, scoring 1-0 in favor of Edmonton.

Ty Dellandrea made his way to the penalty box for hooking a minute later, putting the Oilers on the power play.

But the Sharks were able to kill the penalty, and the period ended with no further goals.

The second period saw a bit of bite from the Sharks, but unfortunately, that came mostly in the form of a Viktor Arvidsson high-sticking penalty at 4:56. The kill held, and the momentum continued to tilt toward Edmonton.

At 10:17, the Oilers doubled the team’s lead. Max Jones scored his first of the season, beating Alexandar Georgiev from the slot.

By this point, it was clear the Sharks weren’t generating enough, and zone entries evaporated into nothing. The Oilers weren’t dominant, the Sharks were just flat.

San Jose showed a bit more urgency in the third period. This was maybe fueled by the knowledge that this was the last 20 minutes of hockey they’d play for four months.

But penalties continued to haunt them. Dellandrea took another at 6:05 for slashing Cam Dineen, and while the PK held, the Sharks couldn’t generate anything when back at even strength.

In the final minutes, Head Coach Ryan Warsofsky pulled Georgiev for the extra attacker, but it didn’t take long for Corey Perry to capitalize, with an empty-netter at 17:23.

And just like that, the 2024/25 season came to an end for the Sharks, with a shutout by Stuart Skinner.

Logan Couture

There was one bright spot in the building: Logan Couture.

The Sharks’ captain, who missed the entire season with a lower-body injury, was present to support his team one last time. Couture’s absence on the ice was deeply felt all year; his leadership and experience could’ve steadied this ship at critical moments.

He announced his retirement due to injury just two days ago. Couture got a full minute of roaring applause from the fans, creating a very emotional moment for the long-time Sharks fans and veterans.

After the game, the entire Edmonton Oilers team lined up to shake Couture’s hand with Corey Perry embracing Couture at the end.

Season Ends on a Familiar Note

The Sharks close out the 2024–25 season 20-50-12, the worst record in the NHL. Eleven straight losses to end the year. A minus-105 goal differential. And a fanbase that hopes for better.

To quote Logan Couture from his press conference, “These people aren’t hockey fans. They’re Sharks fans.”

From the ups and consistent downs this season, nothing held stronger than the energy in the tank at all times from the fans. Not only that, but the players always looked ahead with high hopes, never compromising their sense of self and love for their fans and team.

There are some silver linings: the likely top-three draft pick and the slow emergence of a few young defenders. But nights like this, flat, lifeless, hopeless, were far too common.
