The San Jose Sharks put together a team effort to beat the Edmonton Oilers 5-4 today, and in doing so, the Sharks helped keep the team’s playoff hopes alive. While San Jose clearly has a lot of ground to make up after that five-game losing streak, the regulation win over a division rival and a team ahead of it in the standings certainly helps. Better yet for Sharks fans, the team achieved the win by committee, with five different players scoring goals and 12 different players registering points today.
The New Daddy Shark
And perhaps the best player of them all, or at least the one who had the most to celebrate, was Shakir Mukhamadullin. According to HockeyStatCards, the defenseman was the tops on the ice when it came to Sharks’ blueliners.

Mukhamadullin had several good plays in the defensive end, where he got sticks into lanes and deflected pucks, preventing passes through the crease. He also robbed Jack Roslovic of a wide open net.

And, as if that wasn’t enough, Mukhamadullin went the other way in the third period, scoring the game-winning goal on a feed from William Eklund and a secondary assist from Michael Misa.

All of that work earned Mukhamadullin the Shark Tooth necklace at the end of the game as well as the first star of the game. It was well earned.

The 24-year-old has had a very good last 48 hours, not only did he have one of his best games of the season, but he just became a dad, welcoming a baby girl.
Tilted Ice
Unlike the game against the Calgary Flames, where the Sharks came out hot and then petered out in the second and third periods, this time San Jose kept coming at the Oilers in waves and Edmonton didn’t seem to have an answer, even though Connor McDavid tried.
McDavid got his points, three assists in the loss, but he could not seem to will the Oilers to a win as he has in past games. The Sharks, for their part, came at Edmonton in waves, getting contributions up and down the lineup. Looking at Natural Stat Trick’s Corsi Differential in all situations, you can see that San Jose managed to maintain control of the game through all three periods.

When you look at the lines, three of the Sharks’ four lines had impactful games against the Oilers. All three of those lines scored a goal.

While the Wennberg line did not score a goal, Wennberg himself did score and Kurashev assisted on the play, so 2/3 of the line scored. What’s more, Wennberg was used to match up against McDavid, Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and then Leon Draisaitl when possible, giving him the toughest matchups of the day. It’s no wonder that his line had the most disappointing performance of the night.
Highlight
There were other highlights too, like Yaroslav Askarov coming up big when the Sharks needed him most. San Jose spent the last 1:12 of the game killing off a penalty with Edmonton’s goaltender pulled and Askarov made sure the lead stayed intact.
But, we’ll give the highlight to Michael Misa and the second power play unit. Not only was the second unit moving the puck well, but Misa got his third goal of the season and his first ever at the Shark Tank.

Plus, it’s a housemate connection; the helper came from Tyler Toffoli.
