With just under a dozen games left in the San Jose Sharks’ season, now seems as good a time as any to start the tankathon watch. This season has been much more enjoyable as a Sharks fan, so we’re not going to be total downers. Instead, we’re going to look at this as San Jose’s best shot at a Michael Misa or a Matthew Schaefer. Finishing in last place in the league guarantees that the Sharks will select in the top three.
So, as of 71 games played this season, the Sharks are holding strong to last place in the league. San Jose has 49 points the best in the league at being the worst.
Team | Games Played | Points | Points % |
Sharks | 71 | 49 | .345 |
Blackhawks | 73 | 51 | .349 |
Predators | 72 | 62 | .431 |
Flyers | 74 | 67 | .453 |
Sabres | 71 | 66 | .465 |
Of course, as much as we love what’s happening with the Sharks right now, the team needs to be careful. It’s won two games in a row and is in danger of passing the Blackhawks. Of the teams in the bottom five, the Sharks have the best vibes and that could tank the tank.
Speaking of bad vibes, the New York Rangers are fighting for the team’s playoff lives at the moment. The Rangers have 75 points and are currently fourth in the wild card race. While two other teams also have 75 points — the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Montreal Canadiens — the Rangers have played more games than both of them. As a result, Columbus holds the second wild card spot at the moment and New York is scrambling to catch up. What’s more, there are a pair of teams behind the Rangers — the New York Islanders and the Detroit Red Wings — also within striking distance.
The team isn’t trending well, either. New York is 3-6-1 in its last 10 games and lost to the Anaheim Ducks last night in overtime.
The last time these two teams played was all the way back on Nov. 14. The Rangers won that game 3-2. Since that win, the Rangers have changed its lineup. Out are Reilly Smith, Ryan Lindgren, Jimmy Vesey, Hank Kempf, Filip Chytil and Victor Mancini. In are Nicolas Aube-Kubel, Carson Soucy, Brendan Brisson, Juuso Parssinen, Calvin de Haan, JT Miller and Jackson Dorrington.
The team still has its top scorer, Artemi Panarin, who leads the Rangers with 77 points in 71 games. He’s also tops with 31 goals.
The Sharks are dealing with some injuries. According to San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng, Vincent Desharnais has an upper-body injury. He’s day-to-day and won’t travel with the team on the short SoCal road trip.

Jimmy Schuldt will play in Desharnais’ stead.

As for the rest of the lineup, Carl Grundstrom will not play and Klim Kostin will slot in. Peng reports that Alexander Georgiev was the first off the ice, so it sounds like he’ll start the game.
