Sharks’ 2019-20 Artist Collection series features Girl Mobb

She calls herself Girl Mobb. And for Nina Wright, a.k.a. Girl Mobb, that’s just what she’s trying to create.

“I came up with Girl Mobb because I pretty much left an all-male crew and went out on my own and started painting with other women painters. [I] felt like it was important,” said Wright.

Looking back, it was a good choice. Wright’s work is gaining a lot of attention. In the Spring of 2019, she created a mural for the U.S. Women’s Soccer team.

A few months later, the San Jose Sharks came calling.

“Just really excited and honored that my name would come up for a project like that,” said Wright. “It’s been a year in sports for me because previously to this year I didn’t know anything about sports and then I got hired by the U.S. Women’s Soccer Federation to do a mural for them and I started following U.S. Women’s Soccer and then the Sharks; now I’m interested in hockey. I’m like sports, this is going to be badass.”

Wright says before the Sharks called, she didn’t know much about the team or hockey in general, but she was ecstatic to have the opportunity.

“It was really exciting especially because of all teams it’s the Sharks,” said Wright. “They already have the most badass, coolest icon anyway; the most fierce animal. I was like okay, this is going to be enjoyable to work with.”

The end product was impressive.

Wright was one of five artists contracted by the Sharks to create a custom jersey. While she’s not a Bay Area native, she does call the Bay Area home.

11 years ago, Wright came to the Bay Area from Cincinnati to attend the Academy of Art in San Francisco. Now, she lives in the East Bay, where she’s working to spread the art of graffiti to other young female artists.

“Graffiti Camp for Girls started as a one-time class proposal,” said Wright. “[It’s] a week long mural class. You learn how to spray paint a mural from start to finish. You only use spray paint. Teach you a little bit about the history of graffiti, but the point is to create a mural from start to finish collaboratively. Coming up with a design as a group and finishing out by the end of the week.”

Wright started Graffiti Camp for Girls in 2017. She has done camps in San Francisco, the Midwest, Portland, and Cambodia. In the Spring of 2020, she’ll be running a camp in Fiji.

“It’s all about getting their foot in the door to create visibility. Just trying to be a mentor,” said Wright. “I feel like there is a growing number [of female painters] and I feel like I’ve been able to collaborate a lot. I’m actually collaborating on a project with two of my students from my last San Francisco class for a possibly billboard design. I kind of just roll with their idea of what they want to do and help with moving that forward to the company and logistics part.”

Girl Mobb’s Sharks’ jersey will be handed out to all of the fans at the Sharks vs. Tampa Bay Lightning game on Feb. 1, 2020. It will be the fourth piece in the Sharks’ 2019-20 Artist Collection series.

On Feb. 10, 2020, you can receive the logo on a hat when you buy the tickets as part of the Graffiti Shark Hat Ticket Package.
