Sharks introduce Spanish language broadcast, website

The San Jose Sharks have partnered with Tico Sports, a company that specializes in “partnership with Professional Sports teams to drive an interactive strategy with the Latino audience,” to launch a multimedia Spanish language experience for Sharks fans.

Included in the launch is a new website and Twitter feed (as well as other social media platforms) with Sharks news entirely in Spanish. The Twitter feed plans to feature live tweets during games, as well as pre- and post-game content, just as the English Twitter feed provides. The website will provide Spanish features and game previews.

The Sharks will also be providing a Spanish broadcast for the five remaining regular season home games and all home playoff games, called by Ambrosio Rico, who has previously spent seven seasons as the Spanish broadcaster for the Oakland Raiders.

This is building on the last three years of the Sharks hosting Los Tiburones night, to celebrate Hispanic Heritage. Giveaways for the event featured replica Los Tiburones jerseys designed by local Latinx artists. The Sharks would wear the jerseys during warm ups and later auction them off, with proceeds going to the Hispanic Foundation of Silicon Valley.

The history for tapping into the local audience is there and it’s something the Sharks are continuing to grow and improve on.

“We’re extremely excited to build off the growing success of our Spanish broadcasts from our annual Los Tiburones Nights,” said Scott Emmert, Vice President of Media Relations and Broadcasting. “Our partnership with TICO will assist us in expanding the excitement of Sharks hockey to new audiences via the Sharks + SAP Center App and our television broadcast.”

The broadcast will begin on March 25, against the Detroit Red Wings and will be available on the Sharks + SAP Center App or via the SAP setting on the NBC Sports California’s television broadcast.

No word on if or how this program will continue in the future, but with a TICO Sports partnership formed, hopefully the Sharks can expand to all games next season and continue to grow the game in Latinx communities.
