Sharks recall Dylan Gambrell

Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson announced today that center Dylan Gambrell was called up to the San Jose Sharks, after playing with the Sharks’ American Hockey League affiliate the San Jose Barracuda in last night’s win over the Arizona Coyotes-affiliated Tucson Roadrunners.

Gambrell accompanied the Sharks on a five-game road trip last week, but did not see any game action before being sent down to the Barracuda yesterday to center the Cuda’s second line. Gambrell has played two games so far this season, both with the AHL club. Over those two games, however, he has already tallied 5 points (3 goals, 2 assists), proving him to be a very real offensive threat at the AHL level. He has not appeared in a National Hockey League contest yet this season, and as such has no points over no games.

The Barracuda are not set to play again until this Saturday, October 20 at Stockton against the Calgary Flames-affiliated Stockton Heat, and the Sharks are scheduled to play this Thursday, October 18 at home against the New York Islanders. This call-up makes Gambrell eligible to practice with the Sharks in preparation for that game. That said, based on Pete DeBoer’s prior roster decisions it is questionable whether Gambrell will actually see game action this Thursday.

As Gambrell is currently waivers exempt, one may expect him to be re-assigned to the Barracuda this weekend, either on the 20th or 21st ahead of one of the games in the home-and-home series against Stockton. One might also subsequently expect to see another Gambrell recall ahead of the Sharks’ road trip against the Predators and Hurricanes beginning later this month.

Gambrell was selected by the Sharks in the second round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft out of the University of Denver, where he played three years of NCAA Hockey. He signed with the Sharks this past spring, forgoing the rest of his college eligibility, and appeared in three games with the Sharks to close out the 2017-2018 regular season.
