The San Jose Sharks have made a move to bolster their goaltending depth, signing Quinnipiac University goaltender Andrew Shortridge to a one-year contract.
Shortridge, a junior, will pass on his senior year as a Bobcat to play at the professional level. The 23-year-old goaltender started 27 games for the Bobcats this season, and lead the country in save percentage with .940 and is second in goals against average with 1.51, just behind UMass goaltender Filip Lindberg. His 18-6-2 record saw him finish second in ECAC goaltenders in wins and in 23 of his 26 appearances, Shortridge allowed two or fewer goals.
The Anchorage native is a finalist for the Mike Richter Award, which goes to the top goaltender in all of college hockey. He joins Clarkson’s Jake Kielly (Vancouver Canucks), Arizona State’s Joey Daccord (Ottawa Senators) and St. Cloud’s Cayden Primeau (Montreal Canadiens) in finalists for the Richter award to sign an entry-level deal with an NHL team.
With University of Alberta goaltender Zach Sawchenko signing with the Sharks’ AHL affiliated San Jose Barracuda, last Thursday, the goaltending depth in the Sharks organization has immensely improved. Shortridge will report to the Barracuda on an ATO (Amateur Tryout Agreement) for the rest of the season, where he will wear number 35. It is unknown if he is expected to dress for the Barracuda’s game against the San Diego Gulls tonight.
