Sharks tender qualifying offers to seven players

The San Jose Sharks announced yesterday that they had tendered qualifying offers to seven of their 14 restricted free agents. Nick DeSimone, Dylan Gambrell, Kevin Labanc, Maxim Letunov, Timo Meier, Antti Suomela and Kyle Wood were all tendered qualifying offers, which means if they do not sign, the Sharks can choose to match any offers these players receive in free agency or receive draft pick compensation in return.

Michael Brodzinski, Rourke Chartier, Cody Donaghey, Cavan Fitzgerald, Jon Martin, Joakim Ryan and Alex Schoenborn were not tendered and will become unrestricted free agents come July 1.

The one non-tender that’s surprising to me is Rourke Chartier. This could be a sign that his career is coming to an end, following the concussion issues he’s had over the past three seasons. The non-tendering of Ryan wasn’t necessarily a shock, given head coach Pete DeBoer’s obvious lack of confidence in the defender, but still an interesting decision.

While non-tendering Martin and Fitzgerald has little to no impact on the Sharks, it’s a loss to the San Jose Barracuda, considering that both Martin and Fitzgerald had career years in scoring last season. Brodzinski, Donaghey and Schoenborn spent most of the season with the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL, so it was a foregone conclusion by January that none of them would be tendered.
