Sharks 0, Golden Knights 6: Burn the tape

This isn’t the way the San Jose Sharks wanted to start their five-game road trip, falling 6-0 to the Vegas Golden Knights.

Anything that could go wrong did go wrong for the Sharks in the first period. The Golden Knights were able to generate ten scoring chances and scored on four of them, with Max Pacioretty chipping in two goals. All the other scoring opportunities the Golden Knights created were close to going in, so the Sharks were lucky that it was only 4-0 after one period.

For Pacioretty, it was a significant opening period. However, it was a forgetful period for Marc-Edouard Vlasic, Brent Burns and Justin Braun, as the Golden Knights feasted whenever those three were on the ice defending.

In the second period, it didn’t get any better for the Sharks when William Carrier made it 5-0 on a breakaway opportunity. It was a period that the Sharks dominated in possession with a 57 percent Corsi For, but Marc-Andre Fleury denied every scoring chance they generated.

Then the wheels fell off towards the end of the second period. Evander Kane took two penalties in a row, but it was the second that led to Kane receiving a game misconduct. He didn’t head to the locker room alone — Head Coach Peter DeBoer received an ejection, as well, capping off another period to forget for the Sharks.

The Knights added another goal to add to the Sharks misery to make it 6-0. Despite being up six goals, Vegas was generating pressure and scoring chances, not even allowing the Sharks to get a goal to boost their confidence. Finally, Barclay Goodrow became the third Shark to head to the locker room early when he was given a game misconduct midway through the period to close out a tape burner in Vegas.

Pregame

After spending the last six games in the Bay Area, the San Jose Sharks embark on a five-game road trip beginning with a pitstop in Las Vegas. The Vegas Golden Knights, on the other hand, are one of the Pacific Division teams chasing the Sharks as they sit in fourth place with 22 points and have won their last games.

Lines

The lines for Pete DeBoer look the same as yesterday, with Antti Suomela being a healthy scratch while Lukáš Radil remains in the lineup. Other than, not much else changes for the Sharks. In net, Martin Jones draws back in after having the night off last night against the Vancouver Canucks.

Meanwhile, the Golden Knights will look something along like this:

For the Golden Knights, they’ll go with Marc-Andre Fleury in net who will start in a back-to-back for the first time in over a year, so expect the Sharks to test him tonight to see if Fleury shows any signs of fatigue.

Puck drop at T-Mobile Arena is 7:00 p.m. PT / 10:00 p.m. ET and can be watched on NBC Sports California along with radio coverage on 98.5 KFOX. Hey everyone! Eddie here once again ready to liveblog game one of the Sharks five game road trip; hopefully it starts off on the right foot and they can get the win tonight in Las Vegas.

Update: Just saw caught the end of the pregame show, looks like Aaron Dell is in net and not Martin Jones. Going to have to head over to Twitter and see what’s up. Also, Radil is out and Suomela back in is another change that was announced an hour before puck drop.

However, back to the Jones-Dell situation it looks like no injury and it seems as though DeBoer is riding the hot hand?

First Period

20:00: Alright, drop the puck and lets do this hockey!

19:43: Goal. A weird bounce off a William Karlsson leads to an early goal for the Golden Knights. Not the start the Sharks wanted to see.

15:22: Goal. Colin Miller makes it 2-0 Golden Knights …. this is going to be a long night.

13:23: Suomela gets the rebound off Fleury but couldn’t settle the puck to get it past him.

11:24: The Sharks head to the penalty kill after they are called for holding.

10:31: Goal. Max Pacioretty makes it 3-0 Golden Knights and it’s getting ugly folks

7:34: Cody Eakin gets a shot off and it rings off Dell’s mask, the Sharks can’t stop the Golden Knights offense.

3:32: Goal. Pacioretty gets his second of the game and it’s 4-0 Golden Knights.

End of the First Period: Well, that couldn’t have gone any worse!

Second Period

20:00: So DeBoer was out there alone to start the second period. Not sure if he let the leaders do the talking or he was sending a message to the team.

18:54: Sharks have a scoring chance around Fleury’s net but he’s able to deny them.

16:33: Goal. Erik Karlsson did his best to generate a scoring chance as he set up Melker Karlsson but Fleury denied. It then lead to a William Carrier breakaway and it’s now 5-0 Golden Knights.

13:14: The Sharks get their first power play as they try (and emphasis on try) and get back into this game.

11:14: The Golden Knight are able to kill off the Sharks power play.

6:54: High stick call on Evander Kane, Golden Knights to the power play

4:53: Sharks are able to kill the Golden Knights power play

4:15: When it rains it pours as Kane gets a unsportsmanlike conduct and he’s done for the night and it’s a four minute power play.

3:26: Golden Knights get a penalty for slashing and it’s four-on-four and it looks like DeBoer was also thrown out of the game along with Kane

:17: Teams are all back to even strength

End of the Second Period

Third Period

18:42: Meier with a scoring chance but Fleury is there to deny that.

16:58: Dell is there to deny Ryan Reaves

15:19: Four-on-four for the next two minutes

14:02: Goal. Alex Tuch makes it 6-0 Golden Knights

12:46: Tempers are flaring as Brenden Dillon with some cross checks on Carrier

12:46: Also, looks like the Sharks will get a power play out of the scrum

10:45: The Golden Knights kill off the Sharks power play

10:17: Another game misconduct as Barclay Goodrow joins Kane and DeBoer for an early shower

6:21: William Karlsson with a slap shot but Dell is there with the glove to make the save

3:47: Dell with another save denying Tomas Nosek

2:46: Golden Knights head to the power play

Final Score: Sharks 0, Golden Knights 6
