Head-to-head scoring chances

201314g28_h2h

  • While the Sharks edged the Penguins on the final chance count (albeit, it’s worth noting, to nowhere near the same extent as they did on the shot clock) nearly all of those chances came after the contest was already out of hand. When this game was tied or within a goal, the Penguins outchanced the Sharks 8-2.
  • When intact, the Hertl/Thornton/Burns and Havlat/Pavelski/Kennedy lines combined for a whopping one even-strength scoring chance in this game. It’s tough to beat Buffalo, let alone Pittsburgh, when two of your top three lines just don’t show up. That’s an especially frustrating result because, with Malkin out of the lineup, the Thornton and Pavelski lines had the opportunity to frequently line up against some pretty weak opposing forwards.
  • I’m still not worried about the Sharks‘ power play and won’t be until they stop generating quality looks on it. Seven scoring chances in six minutes of five-on-four ice time is terrific. It’s impossible to predict when exactly those chances will start going in but it has to happen eventually.
  • Tomas Hertl had five scoring chances against both Anaheim and Toronto and followed up those performances with four chances in this one in addition to a goal that came from outside the chance area (one with the Thornton line, one when on the ice with Couture and Wingels and two on the power play). He’s pretty good at hockey, and found a way to contribute even when his linemates weren’t able to.
