Head-to-head scoring chances

201314g30_h2h

  • While the Sharks attempted 69 shots, they managed just 13 scoring chances in this game, two of which came after they pulled Antti Niemi for an extra attacker. As I mentioned in the recap, the Wild appeared to do a solid job of clearing the crease and preventing second-chance opportunities and that seems to be borne out in the chance numbers.
  • Despite Matt Nieto generating six shots on goal, three of which came shorthanded, that third line for the Sharks featuring Nieto, Andrew Desjardins and Tommy Wingels really didn’t generate anything in the way of five-on-five offense. That’s the risk Todd McLellan took by loading up the top six with Joe Pavelski as it leaves the third line rather bare.
  • Granted, it’s not like Havlat/Pavelski/Kennedy was faring much better as a third line so it’s understandable why the coaching staff shook up the line combinations the way they did.
