Head-to-head scoring chances
- We expected a wide-open game given the Stars' preferred style of play and we got one. The teams combined for 39 scoring chances, all but one of which was at even-strength. Dallas has had a penchant for playing in high-event games this season and, while the goaltenders kept this one from getting out of hand on the scoreboard, there were certainly opportunities galore at both ends of the ice.
- It's probably worth noting this was one of the Sharks' worst games of the season from a possession standpoint. They earned just 35% of the unblocked five-on-five shot attempts with the score close, their worst performance of the season in that category save a win against Phoenix that was only "close" for a little under seven minutes. It goes without saying that isn't a strategy for long-term success even though they were able to generate a lot of quality looks with the zone time they did have.
- One guy who didn't struggle in possession was Patrick Marleau who's just on another level right now. He also had the highest scoring chance differential among Sharks forwards in this one and was heavily involved in the offense as five of the Sharks' twenty chances came off his stick and he assisted on another.
- Great game for Justin Braun, too, who led the blueline in both chance and shot attempt differential despite having to play with Brad Stuart for a huge chunk of the game and being matched up most frequently against Dallas' dangerous top line.
- Of course, that line was anything but dangerous for the Stars. San Jose completely neutralized Benn/Seguin/Nichushkin to the tune of outchancing Dallas 7-1 and outshooting them (including misses and blocks) 20-11 at even-strength with Jamie Benn on the ice. The only new line combination that worked for the Sharks was (unsurprisingly, given that it featured arguably the team's three best forwards) Marleau/Thornton/Pavelski but they did a great job of forcing one of the best forward lines in the league to spend the bulk of the game in their own end.
