Head-to-head scoring chances

  • I won’t lie. Given the unbelievably unfavorable circumstances at play (facing the best team in the NHL in a building where the Sharks never win on the second half of a back-to-back with five top-nine forwards injured) I was expecting the Sharks to either lose this game or, best case, steal it courtesy an awful performance by Corey Crawford or fantastic one by Alex Stalock. Neither happened, as they won a game they pretty decisively outplayed Chicago in, outchancing them by a 2-to-1 ratio.
  • What else is there to say about Patrick Marleau and Logan Couture? When they’re tasked with shutting down the opposition’s best, they handily control play. When they have the chance to face off against other teams’ lesser lights, as was the case last night in Chicago, they just lay waste to them. It would be an enormous mistake for Team Canada to leave these two, especially Marleau, off their roster tomorrow.
  • Todd McLellan tried to no avail to get out of the Thornton vs. Toews matchup that Joel Quenneville was fairly intent on creating. The Sharks spent most of those minutes in their own zone, eventually resulting in Niklas Hjalmarsson’s tying goal, but Pavelski, Jumbo and Burns really came through after giving that one up, turning the tide of that matchup a bit and generating some great looks including the Burns goal.
  • Nice bounce-back game from the Sheppard/Desjardins/Kearns line who had a rough go of it against Colorado but did a terrific job against the Hawks, winning their matchup against the Andrew Shaw line that gave the Sharks fits the last time these teams met.
