Head-to-head scoring chances
- San Jose actually had a rather dominant second period (fueled in part, no doubt, by the Flames sitting on a two-goal lead) but somehow couldn't beat Karri Ramo. The damage was done by that point at any rate.
- Mikael Backlund is a player I've thought highly of for a long time and he had a whale of a game last night, ripping the Wingels/Marleau/Havlat line to shreds. Despite a great game the night before in Edmonton, Marty Havlat was as much a part of the problem with that trio through two periods as anyone and, as a result, lost his spot to Eriah Hayes prior to the third.
- James Sheppard quietly had himself a really effective game. In addition to a +2 scoring chance differential, he had the best Corsi% among forwards not on the Thornton line and brought the puck into the offensive zone while retaining possession on all four of his entries. As long as he's healthy, there's absolutely no reason for him not to be in the lineup every night. I'd argue he deserves third-line minutes over Andrew Desjardins or Bracken Kearns at this point, at least until these injuries subside.
