Head-to-head scoring chances
- It was understandably overshadowed by Dan Boyle's injury but the Sharks' start to this game was downright impressive. To go into St. Louis, face an undefeated Blues team, be sans-Boyle from the five minute-mark onward and still register the first six scoring chances (as well as thirteen of the first fifteen shots on goal) is quite an accomplishment. I don't think anyone expected this game to be all but settled by the ten-minute mark but it essentially was.
- San Jose was pretty much immune to score effects through their previous blowout wins, but the Blues aren't exactly the Rangers or Coyotes so they mounted a push late in the second and into the third period, where they outchanced the Sharks 6-2 at evens. As a result, I'm not sure it's all that wise to read too much into the individual chance plus-minus numbers from this one.
- Nieto, for instance, looked much better to my eye (and to the shot differential metrics) than his chance count indicates. The third line as a whole had an encouraging bounce-back game after an uneven showing against the Senators.
- Patrick Marleau is on a 68-goal pace while riding a not-that-outrageous shooting percentage. Granted, we shouldn't expect him to keep averaging five shots a game but it's been another quietly awesome start to the season for Patty.
