The road trip through Canada rolls on with the San Jose Sharks in Montreal to play the Canadiens this afternoon at the Bell Centre. This is the second of two meetings between the teams this season. The Canadiens won the last matchup 4-3 on Feb. 4.
This is once again a chance to see the top two skaters vying for the Calder Trophy. Lane Hutson and Macklin Celebrini are both having stellar seasons. Hutson currently leads the race with 43 points, but Celebrini is close behind with 42 points. Right now, it’s hard to say who has the edge. Hutson’s points are especially impressive, considering he’s a defenseman, while Celebrini’s 0.89 points per game put him above Hutson, who has 0.74 points per game.
The Canadiens come into the game with a 27-26-25 record and still have aspirations of sneaking into the playoffs. That might be a difficult ask since Montreal is sixth in the wild card race at the moment with 59 points. The team is five points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets, which currently hold onto the second wild card spot.
Montreal’s top scorer is Nick Suzuki with 57 points in 58 games. Cole Caufield leads the team with 27 goals.
