The San Jose Sharks are hoping to continue the momentum the team had against the Calgary Flames last night, and bring it into Winnipeg for tonight’s game against the Jets. Luckily, the Sharks have had a whole week off to rest because this is the second game in as many nights for Team Teal. The Sharks had a strong showing in Calgary despite the 3-2 loss.

Looking at Natural Stat Trick’s Corsi differential in all situations, you can see that the Sharks hung with the Flames and, at times, took control. According to Natural Stat Trick, the sides were even with 31 scoring chances apiece and close to equal in expected goals – San Jose had 3.09 expected goals, while Calgary had 3.21.
Both Dustin Wolf and Alexandar Georgiev performed well for their respective teams, with Wolf ultimately winning the goaltending battle. Wolf allowed two goals on 29 shots to Georgiev’s three goals on 36 shots. They had a .931 and .917 save percentage, respectively.
So, what caused the Sharks to lose? It could at least, in part, be attributed to calls that Sharks’ fans thought were bad. For example, this shot to Ty Dellandrea as he was headed to the bench.

Dellandrea got called for holding, while Mikael Backlund received a roughing penalty. Never mind that Dellandrea was later pulled from the ice by the concussion spotter. The Flames received six power play opportunities to the Sharks’ three.
But like we said, the Sharks have the opportunity to show off the players’ short memories. It’s going to be an uphill battle for the Sharks going into Winnipeg, where the Central Division-leading Jets continue to dominate opponents. The Jets currently have a nine point lead in the Central Division playoff race, leading the Dallas Stars. In fact, Winnipeg is second in the NHL, just a point behind the Washington Capitals.
Adding to the problem is that while the Sharks are on the second night of back-to-back games and traveling, the Jets have been hanging out at home and haven’t played since Saturday when the team beat the St. Louis Blues 4-3 in the shootout for the team’s ninth straight win.
Winnipeg has very few deficiencies in its lineup. Kyle Connor is sixth in the NHL in scoring with 70 points and has already broken the 30-goal mark. Mark Scheifele leads the team with 31 goals and the Jets have eight players in double digits in goals scored. In the net, Connor Hellebuyck leads the NHL with a 2.07 goals against average. He’s second in the NHL with a .925 save percentage and, of course, leads the NHL with a 34-7-2 record.
The Sharks and the Jets have met twice already this season. The Jets won 8-3 on Oct. 18 and 4-3 on Dec. 17. This is the final meeting between the teams this season.
