The San Jose Sharks wrap up the season with the final chapter of this year’s West Side Story, facing off with the Winnipeg Jets. The Sharks announced today that prospect Eric Pohlkamp has signed his entry-level deal, but don’t expect the rookie to play tonight; his contract doesn’t take effect until next season.
While Pohlkamp won’t play, John Klingberg will. The defenseman is expected to start in his 700th game tonight, a professional milestone that may or may not wrap up his career in teal. Klingberg is one of many, many Sharks without a contract past tonight and so this is his final chance to show what he can do before July 1 free agency. On the blueline, players like Vincent Desharnais, Mario Ferraro, Shakir Mukhamadullin and Nick Leddy also don’t have contracts past tonight.
As for the game itself, these teams have played twice this seasons and the Sharks have one both games by 2-1 scores. On Nov. 7, San Jose won 2-1 in regulation, while on March 1, the Sharks won in overtime. While another 2-1 win would be a good way to close out the season, ideally, a regulation loss would be better for the Sharks in terms of the draft and the draft lottery.
