The San Jose Sharks are looking to erase an eight game losing streak tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs. San Jose hasn’t won a game since Jan. 27, more than a month ago. This is the final stop on the Sharks’ trip through Canada and it winds up with perhaps the most formidable of all the opponents. Luckily for the Sharks, the Leafs were taken to overtime in Pittsburgh last night while the Sharks were already in Toronto, waiting for them. It’s the best the Sharks can hope for at this point.
Despite fears to the contrary, it sounds like Macklin Celebrini will play tonight. He was banged up yesterday, but says he’s ready to play. Henry Thrun won’t play, though; he was placed on injured reserve. The team called Jimmy Schuldt to take Thrun’s place.
The Maple Leafs are banged up with players like Jani Hakanpaa, Calle Jarnkrok, Max Pacioretty and Chris Tanev injured, but the big guns will be playing. Mitch Marner leads the team with 75 points, most of them are assists. It’s William Nylander leading the team with 35 goals. Four players on the Maple Leafs have 20 or more goals this season. In addition to Nylander, there’s John Tavares, Matthew Knies and Auston Matthews.
In the net, expect to see Anthony Stolarz. Stolarz is 13-5-2 this season with a 2.21 goals against average and .927 save percentage.
This is the first meeting this season with the Maple Leafs. They’ll play again on March 27 in San Jose.
San Jose Sharks lines tonight
Even though Schuldt was called up from the Barracuda, don’t expect to see him playing tonight. It will be Jack Thompson getting the call instead.
