Sharks at Penguins game 33: Lines, game thread and how to watch

The San Jose Sharks are in Pittsburgh today for a day game against the Penguins. The big story is the move the Penguins just made in the net, trading the team’s top goaltender to the Edmonton Oilers for the Oilers’ top netminder. On Friday, it was announced the Penguins acquired Stuart Skinner, defenseman Brett Kulak and Edmonton’s 2029 second-round draft pick for goaltender Tristan Jarry and Sam Poulin.

The Penguins are 14-8-7 and are currently second in the Eastern Conference wild card race. While not outside of the playoff picture, this isn’t a go for it year for Pittsburgh, so to move Jarry out and get a piece that could be moved at the deadline in Kulak is a good piece of business for the Penguins. If the team keeps both, it’s like their own rentals for a playoff run while not hindering future post-Crosby era rebuild work.

As for today’s game, the Sharks will not see the Penguins at full force. While Rickard Rakell returns to the ice after missing more than a month and a half with an injury, there will be no Evgeni Malkin or Blake Lizotte. What’s more, Matt Dumba is on waivers and is headed to the AHL unless someone claims him.

Rakell has not played since Oct. 25 and was red hot until he went down with his injury, scoring eight points in nine games. Malkin and Lizotte were both recently injured. Kulak also isn’t expected to play since the trade just happened yesterday and it’s a 3 p.m. local time start. Skinner is listed on today’s roster, but as the backup goaltender.

Sidney Crosby is the Penguins’ top scorer with 32 points in 29 games. He also leads with 18 goals. Before he went down, Malkin was second on the team with scoring. Bryan Rust and Anthony Mantha are tied for second on the team with nine goals apiece.

Jarry was the Penguins’ starting goaltender. In his absence, Arturs Silovs is likely to start today. Silovs is 4-4-5 this season with a 2.98 goals against average and .900 save percentage.

This is the second of two meetings between the two teams this season. The Penguins beat the Sharks 3-0 at SAP Center on Oct. 18.

San Jose Sharks lines today

Even though this is Alex Nedeljkovic‘s return to Pittsburgh for the first time since he was traded, he will get the day off and Yaroslav Askarov is expected to start. The rotation got mixed up with Askarov’s recent illness.

As for the lines, San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng reports, both Ryan Reaves and Ty Dellandrea are game time decisions. We have them penciled in, but if they’re not good to go, then Zack Ostapchuk is ready to play and the Sharks could go 11/7. On the back-end, Shakir Mukhamadullin is day-to-day, so he will not play. Nick Leddy will play in his place. In the meantime, Vincent Iorio will play in place of Timothy Liljegren, who will be healthy-scratched.
