The San Jose Sharks are still looking for that first win of the season and the New York Rangers might be the team to do it against. The Rangers are having an up and down season and are 3-4-1 to start things off. Scoring, at times, has been an issue for the Rangers, who have been shutout in three games this season and only managed to score one goal in two other games.
That said, if this comes down to a goaltending battle, the Sharks are likely to come out on the losing end of things. The Rangers are getting amazing goaltending to start the season. Igor Shesterkin is tops in the league in goals saved above expected, according to MoneyPuck. He has 8.9 goals saved above expected and has only allowed 7 goals all season. The guy is killing it. While Jonathan Quick isn’t as impressive, he’s not doing horribly either. His goals saved above expected is 0.3 and he’s only allowed four goals against in the two games he’s played. He’s doing well as Shesterkin’s backup.
The good news for the Sharks is that the Rangers still haven’t won at home. That means that maybe, just maybe, San Jose can help contribute to New York’s woes.
The Rangers have a new captain in J.T. Miller. The leading scorer for the Rangers is Artemi Panarin, who has seven points in eight games. He’s not the team’s leading goal scorer, however. That’s Adam Fox.
As far as what’s going on with the Sharks, Luca Cagnoni was called up, but never got a shot to play. He was sent back down to the Barracuda yesterday.
San Jose Sharks lines tonight
San Jose Hockey Now’s Sheng Peng posted the morning skate lines and defensive pairings on Twitter and they aren’t for the faint of heart. Those defensive pairings are a tough pill to swallow. It’s understandable that someone has to sit with the return of Timothy Liljegren to the lineup and it’s probably time for Sam Dickinson to get a learning day, but seeing a top pairing of Nick Leddy and Vincent Iorio is … cringe. I would guess it’s Alex Nedeljkovic in the net with Yaroslav Askarov going tomorrow.

According to NHL.com, this is the projected lineup for the Rangers tonight. New York wants to win at home and so it looks like Shesterkin is going to be in the net to try and win it for the team. San Jose will have to fire early and often at the netminder if the team wants to have a shot at winning.
