The San Jose Sharks have a chance to salvage some semblance of success on this road trip with a win this afternoon in Minnesota. After finding their game in New York, doing a bit of team bonding and getting the first win of the season, the Sharks wrap up the four game road trip with a visit to the Minnesota Wild. A win would finish the road trip with a .500 record and set the Sharks on a better path as the team returns home for a spell.
The Wild are also flailing to start the season with a 3-5-1 start. Minnesota has lost its last two games and, like the Sharks, its last successful win came at Madison Square Garden against the New York Rangers.
Scoring has been a problem for the Wild. The team had been outscored 33-23 this season. The Sharks haven’t fared much better, having been outscored 37-23 so far, but San Jose has played one fewer game than the Wild.
Special teams play will likely be a factor in today’s game. The Sharks’ power play is running at 23.3% which isn’t bad, but the Minnesota power play is running at 30.6% to start the season. Crazier still is the penalty kill. The Sharks’ kill is only 67.9% effective while the Wild kill rate is just 66.7% effective.
Matt Boldy and Kirill Kaprizov are the Wild’s top scorers with 11 points apiece. They each have five goals as well to lead the team.
San Jose Sharks lines today
NHL.com reports that neither team will have a morning skate today given the earlier than normal start. Look for Michael Misa to possibly find his way back into the lineup after sitting in New Jersey against the Devils. Also, we expect that Alex Nedeljkovic will get the start in the net since they’ll likely continue the back and forth, though Yaroslav Askarov certainly earned a second look.
