Sharks embarrassed by New Jersey at home

Not much looked good for the Sharks following Joe Pavelski’s opening goal as San Jose was blown out by the Devils 5-2 on Monday night.

The Sharks were outshot in the first two periods before finally posting a positive shot differential in the final frame. The third period, where the Sharks outshot the Devils 18-5, did not pay off in the form of a goal as Corey Schneider played very well for New Jersey. Schneider made 34 saves.

San Jose went 0/4 on the man-advantage despite looking particularly dangerous on two of them. The puck movement was great when the top powerplay line was on the ice, but meek might be the best way to describe the effort from the second unit. New Jersey finished 1/3 on the powerplay and scored a goal shorthanded, thereby outscoring the Sharks 2-0 in special teams situations.

Jordin Tootoo opened the scoring for the Devils and a pair of former Sharks found the scoresheet to give New Jersey the lead as Steve Bernier scored and Scott Gomez picked up an assist. Matt Nieto tied the game thanks to a gorgeous pass from Tyler Kennedy. It was all New Jersey from then out.

Mike Cammalleri gave the Devils the lead on the powerplay — one of three that Brent Burns handed New Jersey on Monday. Burns finished with three shots and six penalty minutes.

Just as the Sharks finally took the lead in the shot column the Devils extended their lead to two goals on a Travis Zajac goal. New Jersey made it three shorthanded to put the game to bed for good.

The Sharks host the Kings on Wednesday night and with any luck will decide to show up for puck drop against the team that eliminated them from the playoffs less than a year ago.
