Joe Thornton scored his 1,000th point tonight, although not necessarily in the method that was expected.
With the game 4-1, Thornton scored his 21st goal of the season, securing a milestone which puts him amongst the most elite group of individuals to ever play in the NHL. Although the game did not end in San Jose’s favor, Thornton’s achievement should not be discounted in the slightest.
Still, San Jose lost it’s second straight game in regulation, after a streak in which they went 26-4-4. It’s a disheartening fact for a team that had been so dominant in recent weeks; two straight losses as the season winds down is a step back to earth for a gorup who looked to be putting the pieces together at the right time.
The Sharks have one game left to prove that their recent stretch wasn’t just a streak of random success. Many have started to believe that this may be the year for San Jose, especially considering their dominance of their Pacific Division opponents.
Tomorrow is fan appreciation night at HP. If the Sharks truly wish to show their following that they’re not the same team as in years past, they will come out and finish the season strong against Phoenix.
