With Adam Burish clearing waivers earlier today, the Sharks reassigned the veteran forward to Worcester and immediately used his open roster spot to recall defenseman Matt Tennyson from the AHL. Tennyson, 24, has three goals, six points and 34 shots on goal in 17 games with Worcester this season. Just as importantly, he’s a right-handed shot capable of taking over the third pairing right-side slot vacated by Jason Demers.
On the surface, this seems to be a move made in order to pair Tennyson with Mirco Mueller on the Sharks’ third pairing; those two were partners early in training camp before Mueller worked his way up the depth chart. If that’s the case, either Scott Hannan or Matt Irwin’s future with the team seems to be in question as the Sharks are now carrying eight defensemen and will probably want to create a roster spot to activate Mike Brown soon. Tennyson has 56 points in 136 career AHL games over the past three seasons and registered two assists in four games with the big club back in 2013. Assuming he draws into the lineup in place of Hannan the Sharks should now have one of the most mobile bluelines in the league.
